You’ve heard it before, right? “Do what your love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” How true that is! When my uncle Neil flew in from Minnesota for my wedding with Marina, we were having a conversation about work, entrepreneurship, etc., and we got to talking about the motivation for always trying to accomplish more, and I said something from the heart, and once it came out, I realized how truly blessed I am…
“Uncle Neil, the Reason I Work so Hard is Because I truly Love Doing 85% of What I Do, Every Day!”
I believe that the first step towards “doing what you love” is to determine exactly what it is that you love! Ask yourself what you love doing and why you love doing it; do this for work-related and NON-work related activities. Really take a half hour to clear your mind and think about the answer to those important questions, and when the voice in the back of your head says, “You can’t do that because…..” then either dismiss it, or in the event of a legitimate challenge, write it down, but then get right back to focusing on what you love.
Cut it Out!
Here’s a HUGE key to enjoying your life: identify ALL the things in your life or that you do on a regular basis and then commit and determine to find a way to cut each of those items from your life. Now, of course most of those things will still need to get done, so what you’re looking for is a way to either have someone else do them OR find a more efficient way of getting them done. (Bonus Tip: You can find GREAT virtual assistants at www.oDesk.com to help with these tasks!)
Find a Way to Make Money Doing What You Love
That’s such a broad and generic headline that I hesitate even writing I’m going to stick with it, because there’s no better way to say it. First I’m going to address the business-owners, and then I’ll address the fine people who work for someone else. For business owners – there had to be a reason(s) that you got into the industry that you’re currently in, right? What were those reasons? What is it about your business that you just LOVE? Is it the challenge…making the sale…running an organization….the marketing…what is it? Determine what THOSE things are, and then find a way to attract quality people onto your team to LOVE doing the things that you “hate.” When you do this the right way, it will be so liberating…you’ll feel so energized! And what’s more is that your business will be all the better for it!
Now for those of you who haven’t yet made the leap to becoming an entrepreneur! First of all, i should disclose that I’ve only ever worked for someone for a grand total of 6 months in my entire life, and at the time, I was 15/16 years old. However, I trust that you’ll find these insights helpful to you as you look to make the transition to business owner. Because I’m limited on space here, I’m going to keep it short and sweet. What I recommend you do is follow the instructions listed above to discover your strengths. Next, keep in mind that you don’t have to make a “leap of faith”…there’s this thing called a transition…which means that you’re perfectly capable of starting your new business part-time before firing your boss! Start this process with education, then networking, and then implementation, and always be working on your next marketing plan!
Here’s Your FIRST Major Goal: Get Paid!
You’re probably thinking, “Well DUH, Jim! I could’ve told you that!” If that’s what you’re thinking, you’re right, but let me explain why that’s right: First of all, something magical happens the first time that you get paid from a new venture! I remember my first ($13,800) check from real estate, and I remember my first $7 webinar that someone bought…both of which instilled in me a HUGE dose of excitement and creativity, and the same wil happen for you when you make your first sale!
Here’s the Bottom Line…
Believe that you can create for yourself a lifestyle that truly enables you to do what you want, when you want, and with whomever you want! Then…get to work bringing that belief to life.
To YOUR Success,
Jim “JimmyZ” Zaspel
