We’ve all done it…gotten caught-up in the goal-setting frenzy that accompanies this time of the year, and don’t me wrong, it’s as good of a time as any to set goals, but the new year shouldn’t be why you’re setting goals!
Don’t Waste Anymore Time. Get Started on Your Goal’s Now! With Jim’s 3-day Freedom with Flipping Summit and Bus Tour.
The reason most people’s goals and resolutions for the New Year don’t last is because their reason for setting them is rooted in the time of year. But what happens when it’s March? July? September? I can tell you this with certainty: the only way to get traction in accomplishing your goals is to 1) make sure they are the right kinds of goals, 2) make sure you’re passionate about them, and 3) identify the specific steps you need to take in order to accomplish those goals – and then do those steps consistently.
So, What Are the “Right” Kind of Goals?
I’m a big picture kind of guy. I like goals that stretch me. I like goals that make people ask me if I’m feeling OK when I share the goals with them. I’m aggressive. But…I’ve had to learn (the hard way) that setting the goal is simply the first step of a marathon. In other words, I’ve had to back those goals up with action plans.
But back to the question about what kind of goals to set. There isn’t enough space on this page to adequately work through the answer to this question, but here are some questions you need to ask about your goals when you set them:
- Is the goal specific and measurable?
- Does it have a deadline?
- Is it realistic?
- Does the goal stretch you?
- What will you need to DO in order to hit this goal?
- What kind of person do you need to become in order to reach this goal?
- What will you have to sacrifice in order to hit this goal?
- Are you willing to do the things listed in Q’s 5-7?
- Does this goal inspire and motivate you?
- Is this goal in-line with your core values, your mission, the kind of person you are, and what you enjoy doing?
But What If You’ve Failed At Hitting Your Goals before…why Bother?
I spent 3-4 years in this business beyond dead-broke, but I never stopped setting goals, so believe me when I say I know exactly how you feel if you’re wondering “why bother?”
But here’s the deal – you’ll never accomplish without goals what you could’ve accomplished with goals. Goal setting is a crucial step in the process of getting from where you are to where you want to go. This leads me to my next point: you can’t hit a target if you don’t know what the target is!
Last but not least…the process of setting goals is motivating in and of itself…and sometimes that’s the only cause for excitement we have. If you’re “down” right now, I feel for ya. I really do, I’ve been there. BUT…the mere fact that you’re a member of GPREIA shows me that you haven’t given up. You’re putting yourself in a position to succeed.
So, identify the “target” and keep your eye on the target (your goals) no matter what.
