First of All, EVERY Entrepreneur NEEDS a Virtual Assistant…or two
Why? Because in every business, there are repetitive, often mind-numbing, tasks that can easily be put on auto-pilot. What’s more is that usually, these tasks are the kinds of tasks that you can outsource for $3 – $12 per hour! So, if you’re spending time doing a $12/hr task, all the sudden, your time is only worth whatever it costs you to pay someone else to do it!
Here’s How Your Life Will Improve When You Hire a VA
- You’ll stop procrastinating, because your assistant will do all those things you hate!
- You’ll stop wasting time taking in-bound calls from marketing campaigns. (Your VA can use this awesome tool to submit buyer and seller leads.)
- Your productivity will sky-rocket.
- You’ll make more money, because you’ll be freed-up to spend time on revenue-generating activities…money, baby!
Don’t Make the Same Mistake I Made for 3 Years (Yes, I’m a slow learner)
For my first few years in business, I would pride myself in NOT giving exact instructions to my staff! I would say stupid stuff like, “If no one showed me how to do ___, then there’s no reason for me to show my staff.” Of all the asinine things to say!!! Finally, I learned the value in creating scripts, systems, and step-by-step instructions (with screenshots if necessary) for everything, and my life instantly got better. Be sure to set your staff up for success.
Do THIS Consistently, and You’ll be Glad You Did
It’s god to assign tasks, and it’s good to create systems and protocols, etc., but true effectiveness and creativity on the part of your staff will only take place AFTER you implement systems for accountability and goal-setting. Each of your staff members should create and submit to you their self-created goals for the upcoming week, and they should also report on their performance against the previous week’s goals. Weekly goals should be 2-5 items. I also like to have them do the same thing at the beginning and end of every day. I know that this sounds like a lot of extra work, but it’s the same thing we entrepreneurs do, right? Why do we do it? Answer: Because it makes us more effective! And if it makes us more effective, then why not have our staff do the same thing so that our effectiveness as a company will multiply?!?
4 Steps for Finding the Right Virtual Assistant
First of all, identify the set of tasks that you’re looking to delegate. Secondly, ask yourself what kind of person or personality would not only be good at doing those things, but also ask what kind of person / personality would enjoy doing that job? Determine the ideal kind of person and personality for the job so that you can keep people long-term. Third, make sure that you interview (by phone) at least 3 people for any job…even if you think the first one is the “perfect” candidate. Last but not least, the best source for outsourcing (pun intended J ) is www.Odesk.com. They’ve got great systems for tracking and monitoring your VA’s work log.
Now, go hire yourself a VA…even if it’s just for 5 hours per week! You are going to LOVE the new-found freedom that you have!
